Twenty-six years of building software
Justin encountered programming early and became a polyglot developer, shipping production systems in Java, PHP, Python, Ruby, C#, Swift, and JavaScript/TypeScript — contributing to open source while working across the entire software lifecycle: product, UI/UX, QA, and DevOps.
Much of his career has been spent in professional services. Working alongside CEOs, CTOs, and engineering teams gave him a close view of how organizations approach technological change — and one mistake appeared again and again: leaders expected technology to solve problems that had not yet been clearly understood.
He developed a different philosophy. Understand the problem first. Establish a workable solution. Then use technology to make that solution faster, more reliable, and easier to scale.
Where the idea behind the book came from
The central idea emerged while Justin was building a Claude Code plugin meant to guide the full development lifecycle, from proof of concept to enterprise delivery. He realized that instead of working on the product again and again, the larger opportunity was improving the system responsible for building it. Better instructions, tooling, tests, and feedback loops improve every result that system produces.
He stopped thinking only about building the product. He began thinking about building the system that builds the product.
That shift — from producing the answer to building the conditions under which answers deserve to be used — became Beyond Doing.
Who the book was written for
Justin wrote Beyond Doing primarily for executives navigating this shift. He believes organizations must reconsider the qualities they hire for, give existing employees room to experiment and adapt, and move from measuring output to measuring value.
In this new normal, curiosity and systems thinking will matter more than familiarity with any particular tool. The advantage will belong to people who can direct AI, improve the systems around it, and remain accountable for what those systems produce.
Writing
Justin publishes essays on AI leadership and work design in Ideas, including The AI Productivity Paradox: Why Faster Work Creates More Waiting and AI Performance Management: Measure Value Instead of Effort. These essays explore ideas developed in the book; they are personal analysis rather than research findings, and workplace stories are labeled as composite examples when they are not documented cases.
